Sex therapy: What is it? What issues/problems can be helped?

Sex plays a major role in everyone's physical and emotional wellbeing, yet it's still a sensitive subject for many people to discuss openly. Fortunately, today's online sex therapy options can help you with issues concerning sex and sexuality in the privacy of your home.

What is a Sex Therapist?

Sex therapists handle a variety of issues ranging from a partner's sexual dysfunction to an individual's concerns about their sexuality. Since sex and sexuality issues are all unique and affect each person differently, it's important that a sex therapist takes the time to do an evaluation of your medical and sexual history of you as a single, or as a couple. Once a sex or sexuality issue is outlined in detail, a sex therapist can provide you with suggestions to improve your sexual health and lifestyle.

Sexual Issues Treated by Sex Therapists

Sex therapists are trained to deal with sexual disorders, such as problems maintaining arousal, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and difficulties achieving orgasm. Sexual issues can stem from illness, medications, physical pain, and anxiety. Your treatment will depend on the cause or contributing factors.

Whether the source of a sexual issue is medically or psychologically based, a sex therapist can help you individually, or help you and your partner design a personal set of coping strategies to get your sex life and sexual health back on track.

Sexuality Issues Treated by Sex Therapists

Many sex therapists can assist people with issues concerning sexuality. Sexuality deals with what arouses a person's desire for sex. Most commonly, sexuality falls into two categories, lifestyle and behavior. Sexual lifestyle and behavior issues arise when a person does not have enough support or personal strategies to cope with problems related to their sexuality.

A person's sexual lifestyle evolves around the inherent factors of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender role. Sexual orientation decides a person's lifestyle as bisexual, gay, or, straight. Gender identity pertains to how a person views themselves within a gender. Social gender roles are associated with how one adheres to cultural expectations of masculinity and femininity. A good sex therapist will not try to change any factors that make up your lifestyle, but they will assist you with problems concerning your personal and interpersonal relationships. A sex therapist can also help you embrace your lifestyle while maintaining sexual health.

Alternative sexual behaviors, like fetishes and sexual role play are not considered sexuality issues unless they interfere with someone's ability to function on a daily basis, like with sexual addiction. Sexual behaviors are also a problem if they endanger the wellbeing of another person or animal, as in pedophilia. Likewise, sexual behavior can become an issue if it infringes on private or public property, like with sexual exhibitionism. If your sexual behavior is an issue, it's alright to breech the subject online, but treatment for out of control sexual issues are best dealt with in face to face sessions with a therapist.

Finding the Right Sex Therapist Online

Online therapy sites can offer advice in an open forum or they can provide therapy privately over the phone. In your search for a therapist, it is your right to interview the therapist and ask them about their experience with your situation. You can also ask for professional credentials.

Taking the time to find an online sex therapist that understands your needs and specific issues will certainly be of great value to your mental and sexual wellness. Even better, being open and honest with your sex therapist will earn you, your sexual freedom and emotional wellbeing.
